Research overview
Retatrutide was developed by Eli Lilly and is given once a week in clinical trials.
In a phase 2 trial of 338 adults with obesity, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023, weekly retatrutide reduced body weight by up to 24.2% on average at 48 weeks, compared with 2.1% on placebo.
The first phase 3 results (TRIUMPH-1) followed in the same journal on 29 September 2026: in 2,339 adults over 80 weeks, average weight change was -17.6% to -25.0% depending on the dose, against -3.9% on placebo. The most common side effects were gastrointestinal.
